New group on Precision Agriculture in pastures to start in the Bathurst area

Expressions of Interest are sought from producers in the Bathurst area to be part of an exciting new group investigating Precision Agriculture in pastures.

The Central Tablelands Local Land Services is seeking interested persons to be part of the inaugural group using and trialling new technologies. The first workshop with the group is planned for Wednesday 11 May.

Clare Edwards, Senior Lands Services Officer – Pastures, is excited about forming this new group, which will initially come together for four meetings over the next year.

“Precision agriculture is often talked about in the cropping sector, and I think it is an opportune time to showcase some of the new technologies in pastures”.

“There are some interesting and more accurate tools that could be used in pasture situations and variable landscapes. I would like to trial some of these with a group of producers who are also interested to see how they perform” Clare said.

“Many pasture and livestock management decisions are based on how much herbage mass we have and the level of groundcover. If we can clarify this information and make it more precise, we can help producer’s efficiencies and production”.

The initial day will cover estimating pastures and cover some current tools which are available. Further workshop days will cover topics such as virtual fencing, site specific fertilisers, GPS collars for livestock tracking, data collection and satellite technology.

The group will be participatory in nature, that is, learning by doing and the group learning over time. The group will also have access to some new research available for pastures and variable landscapes.

Potential participants should have completed some form of pasture assessment training, for example Prograze, but this is not essential.

There is no cost but there are limited spaces in the group.

The first day for the group to come together will be Wednesday 11 May, starting at 10.30am until 3.00pm.

RSVP date is Friday 6 May to Clare Edwards by email
